Researchers, professionals, and policymakers came together for an afternoon full of insights, discussion, and inspiration around the theme: Interest versus Talent Development – A New Perspective. Children learn and develop optimally when they have fun, are curious, and choose what they want to do themselves.
Development and Learning by stimulating curiosity
Recent research shows that children’s development and wellbeing are best supported in an environment that offers a diverse and engaging range of activities and materials and allows them to explore. Additionally researcher Pauline Slot from Utrecht University and PhD candidate Lisanne Jilink both highlighted the crucial role of stimulating curiosity to support children to discover and develop their particular interests.
Take, for example, a child who plays endlessly with LEGO and develops a passion for building or technology. Inspiring videos were also shown. What stood out? When children are clearly enjoying their play, the childcare staff become just as excited! A beautiful exchange of energy.
What does this mean for after school care?
During the symposium, scientists, policymakers, and one of our own pedagogical coaches discussed how after-school care can truly support children’s development and wellbeing. The conclusion? By offering a diverse and engaging range of activities and materials, and by stimulating curiosity, we help children develop to their full potential. But this requires certain conditions: time, space, proper training, and the courage to truly challenge children to try something new.
Anything but child’s play!
Partou uses ‘six building blocks’ which include almost all areas of development to support children’s development and exploration. During our Think Along Weeks, we go even further: children themselves help decide what activities go on the yearly calendar. We already do a lot, but we keep investing, because a rich play environment and well-trained professionals are essential. And that’s anything but child’s play!
A commitment to care
No matter where Partou is, we strive to make a difference: for children, families, our people, and the planet. Curious about what we do, what we dream of, and the challenges we face? Read the Social Responsibility Report
